Using the bathroom shouldn't be a struggle! Yet, for many people, the standard toilet height is causing struggle and discomfort.  If you're looking to improve your bathroom comfort, you have two main options: installing a taller toilet or using a toilet seat riser. This article will guide you through the pros and cons of each solution, helping you find the perfect throne height for a more comfortable and accessible bathroom experience.

Various Throne Height Needs Require Different Solutions

Taller people with good mobility may prefer the more permanent solution of installing a taller toilet.  I highly recommend feeling out various toilet models in the showroom to find the perfect height for you. Bring anyone who will be using the toilet to ensure their comfort as well. Installing a taller throne is not only a more permanent solution, but it can be a bit more costly.

Taller people who have mobility issues may benefit more from a toilet seat riser. Many risers have handles for stability and eliminate the need for installing grab bars around the toilet.

Personal Experience with Toilet Seat Risers

As a caregiver for a taller person with limited mobility (my adopted Pop), I've tried two toilet seat riser models. The first, from Glacier Bay sold at Home Depot, provided the needed height and stability for Pop to avoid falls by attaching firmly to the original toilet seat. Though it's weight capacity says it is suitable to handle up to 300 lbs, the toilet seat opening is a bit small and would be better suited for people with thinner frames.

Glacier Bay's elevated toilet seat claims to fit both elongated and standard toilet seats, but really only fits standard seats. On elongated seats it pushes the toilet tank back.

The second riser, the AUITOA 4-in-1 Raised Toilet Seat with Handles and Back, was ordered online from Walmart.com and arrived quicker than expected. This stand-alone riser has a weight capacity of 300 lbs, adjustable height (which makes it suitable for people with limited mobility of many sizes), and a standard-size seat opening. Pop appreciates the non-slip rubber feet and the fact that it also fits in his shower stall, aiding him during showering.

The AUITOA can be used at the bedside if needed as it comes with a collapsible bowl, granted it is not very deep.

Choosing the right toilet height solution depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you have good mobility and want a long-term solution, a taller toilet might be ideal. For those with mobility limitations, a toilet seat riser with handles offers increased stability and can be a more affordable option. No matter which solution you choose, consider factors like weight capacity, adjustability (if needed), comfort, budget, and your bathroom layout.
