When you have pinched a nerve, making it hard for you to move, you want to know what to do for a pinched nerve so that you can relieve the pain and have normal mobility again quickly.

Knowing the Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve Helps Diagnosis

The symptoms of a pinched nerve can be described as an excruciating sharp and/or burning pain accompanied by tingling,  numbness,  and/or weakness in the surrounding connected muscles.

When experiencing the symptoms of a pinched nerve, it may become worse while you sleep.

You may not be able to see a doctor quickly, but you will want pain relief quickly. These natural home remedies will help you quickly relieve the pain caused by a pinched nerve.

Natural Home Remedies to Relieve a Pinched Nerve Pain

This frozen hand towel and these essential oils are great at relieving pinched nerve pain.
A frozen hand towel and essential oils are great at relieving pinched nerve pain.
A great natural home remedy is therapeutic grade essential oils. In particular, peppermint, cinnamon (cassia) bark, and lavender blended together are a great natural pain reliever. The cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory which may also help relieve the pressure being applied to the nerve.
Apply the essential oils topically with a carrier oil like vitamin E where you are experiencing pain. This blend works great on my carpal tunnel, sciatic nerve pain, and arthritis.
To relieve pain from a pinched nerve fairly quickly, apply an ice pad or hot pad to the area of the pinched nerve. If you pinched a nerve in the back, legs, or feet, lay down when you apply the ice pad or hot pad. I have had the best results using an ice pad as compared to the heat pad when I pinched a nerve in my back.
Make an ice pad by wetting a hand towel and removing the excess water from it.  Fold it twice then place it in a gallon zipper bag and freeze it flat. The hand towel can easily be made into a hot pad pretty much the same way except instead of freezing it, microwave it for 30 seconds to a minute.
Another natural home remedy to relieve the pain from a pinched nerve in the back is elevating your legs enough for your thighs to be parallel with the wall. Elevating your legs is extremely beneficial with the ice pad and therapeutic grade essential oils.
Use a chair to elevate your legs while you lay flat on the floor. You may use a yoga mat and thin pillow for your head if you have them.
After trying one or two of the first suggested home remedies to treat a pinched nerve, try doing some therapeutic stretching. Stretching may help reposition and realign what is placing pressure on the pinched nerve and is definitely a natural and effective home treatment you should try.  Below, I've described the therapeutic stretches doctors have told me to use to help me relieve the pain from a pinched nerve and to help with my arthritis.

Therapeutic Stretches to Help Relieve Pain

One therapeutic stretch you can do for a pinched nerve in the back would be to lay flat on your back and bring both knees to your chest while keeping your back flat on the surface you are laying on. Hold that position for 30 seconds then lay flat again. Repeat the stretch throughout the day.
Another therapeutic stretch you can do for a pinched nerve in the back is to lay flat on your back, bring one knee up to your waist keeping the other leg straight. Put the hand that is opposite of the knee raised on the outside of the knee and pull your knee to lay flat to the side of the hand you used, while keeping your other shoulder and arm flat on the surface you are laying on. Hold that position for 30 seconds then reverse the steps to lay flat again. Repeat the stretch with the other leg. Repeat the stretch throughout the day.

A therapeutic stretch you can do for a pinched nerve in the wrist and to help with carpal tunnel pain is to make a hook with your index finger then hook it to the inside of your thumb or pinky between the first and second joints. Pull your thumb or pinky towards your wrist and hold it for 5 seconds. Release and repeat the stretch several times a day.
If the signs and symptoms of a pinched nerve don't subside within a few days and have not responded to the home remedies above you should see your doctor to have your nerves checked out for damage.
